In these times, our basic assumptions about goodness and fairness, what it means to be human, even whether hopeis possible or not--are getting unearthed, pulled apart and thrown into the fire. It's disorienting and surreal. But it needs to happen.
And the truth is ugly--We have been in denial of the trauma that happens to children and adults all around us AND TO US. Domestic violence and sex trafficking--Innocents are in this moment--being hurt in unimaginable ways. I believe all of us need to acknowledge this--There is no hope if perpetrators are protected and secrets are kept. Trauma survivors are most often hurt by the people who were supposed to care and protect them.
As a therapist, my job is to hold onto hope for those who can't. It's getting harder these days. Some days I feel as though the ground is moving under my feet and I can't get my footing--The bombardment of the News Cycle and Social Media keep me tossing in giant waves like those crab fishing boats in the North Atlantic.
But I hold onto hope--and I offer compassion. I believe people when they tell me someone hurt them. Hope keeps me going and makes me want to face a new day. And I have it on good authority that Love wins.
